Appearance: Since Akihiko was born, he has had strange issues with his appearance. Those issues will be explained later but due to this he always wears hats, mostly page boy hats. His favorite hat is a blue and white stripped page boy hat. Due to his job, he usually wears button-up shirts and ties. With matching slacks and designer leather shoes. Aki's features are soft, yet not overly feminine.
After work, he puts on loose fitting jeans, with a soft turtleneck grey sweaters. Most of his clothes are from expensive designer brands but you could never tell from his demeanor. During the colder winter months he will wear a large black or dark grey trench coat, soft grey scarf, and matching leather gloves. Also he may wear a vest over his button-up shirt. Of course being a Quincy, his cross is his most important piece of clothing.
He is very slim, yet toned, though even at his age many people mistake him for being quite younger; which, at one time annoyed him. In an act of defiance against his family, he wanted a piercing, he chose a tongue piercing; because, he could easily hide it at work, but not from the overly perceptive Quincy.
Personality: Akihiko is a great guy, most people love him and most woman find it hard to resist his smile. He has a way of grinning that looks as if he is hiding something but can instantly melt into cheeky or inappropriate. Since Akihiko has had to deal with the tough woman since birth, he has always has the highest respect for intelligent and strong willed woman. Though in his youth he liked the easy dumb girls, because they were easy, he now finds himself annoyed with this type.
Typically, he is very laid back, something not known to be a very "Quincy trait", but he really doesn't care. He is who he is and he is happy with himself. Though he is not a typical Quincy he still has "Quincy honor" and loves his people; and would backhand any human or Shinigami that would attempt to dishonor them. Once again, he is calm and it would take a lot to anger him, but even when angry he is level-headed and shows no signs of anger. It is important to mention that he is not lazy. He is just very efficient and intelligent that he finds himself with access time, when not working out or training.
Aki is comical and sarcastic, his workplace associates have gotten so used to his sense of humor that they are unsure when he is being serious. His sarcasm is not usually mean spirited, on the contrary, it is normally light hearted and banter-ish. Due to these qualities he is very easy to get along with and enjoys the company of others.
He is fair and prefers not to fight woman, as Quincy have their honor. He also will not fight children or those that are half dead or beaten. During a fight he is always calm and relaxed, nothing ever seeming to upset or irritate him. Even in his angriest of moments, he remains level-headed.
Akihiko has a habit of clicking the ball of his tongue ring on his teeth when he is deep in thought. The loud clicking sound usually annoys people but he doesn't really care nor would he stop. This has become a comforting habit and he has even joked it is due to his oral fixation. Freud would be so proud... Aki also has a habit of checking himself out, anywhere, anytime. Whether he passed a random mirror, or catches his own reflection, he will stop and check himself out. Then adjusts himself, or his outfit, in anyway needed, flashes himself a smile (occasionally a wink) and then continues with whatever he was doing.
Akihiko speaks in a very relaxed dialect, this is another way of rebellion against his family. Most would never know his upbringing was so proper by his speech and appearance. Though his accent is already quite different then other people of Karakura town due to his family moving around, and employing immigrants to help raise their children. (See History for full story.)
Akihiko fears never becoming strong enough to make a difference in the battle with the hollows. He loves his job as a plastic surgeon because it stimulates his artistic abilities and love of sculpting but his true ambition is his job as a Quincy. He fears that in his own weakness he will never arise to the challenge. Aki also fears the Shinigami will one day break the pact with his family, causing an all out war with the Quincy. His family is noble and proud, if the Quincy had royalty it would be them, and if the Yabusame family ever decided the pact was over, then it would be over and war would ensue. Akihiko fears war with the Shinigami, he finds it pointless as he believes they are working towards a similar goal. Though he has a natural hatred and mistrust of Shinigami.
Akihiko has a strange fear of being alone, it causes him to become anxious and nervous. He can handle it but after long period of time, if alone, he will go outside just to walk around other people. It is not necessarily the interacting with people that he needs, he is happy with comfortable silence, it is just knowing that he is not alone, somehow, is enough.
Strengths: Like all Quincy, he is highly intelligent, though he prefers to hide his massive intellect by acting flippant or complacent. This causes opponents to underestimate the genius Quincy. Being blessed with an eidetic memory, when fighting he instantly retains all the small details, being able to use his surroundings to his advantage with ease. He doesn't like the ninja-like fighting of other Quincy, he instead prefers to develop control over Ginto. While in battle his attacks are large and powerful, as compared to hiding in the bushes and shooting arrows.
Weaknesses: His biggest flaw is his flippant and childish behavior. He is laid back to the point of annoyance at times, things seemingly never bother or effect him. Then if he has some energy it is usually gear towards his child-like side of his personality. He jokes in ways that are intelligent, yet patronizing, and doesn't mind if it hurts or effects people. Akihiko is a flirt. Any pretty girl, in his mind, should, and would, get hit on. Once again, he has moments where he does it in a childish way, or overly cheeky. He isn't creepy by any means, and most woman can't, and don't, resist his advances; but it is still a flaw at times. Especially when the time arises to fight or be serious. His lecherous ways tend to get him in trouble.
Due to his life as a surgeon and his high intellect, he tends to get annoyed with people who can't see the "obviousness" of a situation. When someone is unaware of the severity of a situation or just doesn't have the mental capability to grasp it, he becomes patronizing and mocking. His most obvious flaw is his clear lack of defense, when forced to be in a close ranged battle he lacks a shield or any real natural defense. Instead he currently tries to rely on intellect and speed, to overcome his lack of defense.
Quincy Bow: Akihiko wears a rosary-like bracelet around his arm, the beads around her wrist alternate black and deep blue. This bracelet was handed down through the oldest and most prestigious Quincy family, the Yabusame family.
His Mekkyaku is a eight-pointed star of choas, the intricate lines and detail on the cross are mesmerizing, the patterns are even unknown to him. He received this cross at a very young age, the elders told him he would, one day, understand this pattern. The middle of the cross has a small strange stone that eerily looks like an eye.
When he manipulates his reiatsu to create his bow, the bow also retains the same strange and unknown patterns, the eye now placed in the middle of the bow. Unlike most quincy, whose bows are blue.
Abilities: His bow produces special, turnip-shaped arrows, with look similar to his Quincy cross. The arcane-like arrows are more than just for appearance, once the turnip arrowhead hits it's target, it spikes outwards causing a painful wound. Also pulling out the arrow will cause massive bleeding and pain.
Like most members of the Yabusame Family, he was taught at a young age to learn all the Quincy arts. Now being 20, he is focused on increasing his training of the Quincy arts to reach mastery level. He has obtained a Hirenkyaku, yet where he excels in Hirenkyaku, he lacks in Ginto. Though he is not talentless in Ginto, he is simply in need of practice and the motivation.
Quincy Equipment: He has been trained with basics, but has yet to receive anything but his bow. He will, with time, earn all the rights to these weapons.
The Yabusame Family:
Before we can learn about Akihiko it is important to learn about the society that gave birth to such a man. The Yabusame family is the oldest and noblest family from the race of Quincy. Quincies are beyond the normal human and have reiatsu's that rival Captain Shinigami. They are intelligent and proud but there powers throw off the balance of souls, the Shinigami, needing to conserve the balance, approached the Quincies to stop using their powers. During that time, the Quincy could not understand how they were supposed to live their lives, knowing the suffering of souls, and act as powerless bystandards. In there eyes, the Shinigami didn't, or couldn't, do enough to protect everyone. So war broke out, it was bloody and many casualties were lost on both sides.
One night the Yabusame family set up an elaborate trap, it was successful and the Shinigami lost many. Soul Society were never ones to back down, their counterattack was devastating to the Quincy. The head of the Yabusame family at the time was Yasusame Takashi; he foresaw only more bloodshed and devastating casualties on both sides. Fearing for his people, he set up a meeting with the Captain Commander of the Seireitei, they spoke for 2 days straight, never resting and barely stopping for essentials. Both found respect and understanding for one another, and in the end they came to an agreement. The Yabusame family would use their influence to control the number of Quincy that were allowed to battle, all Quincy are taught "the ways" for defensive purposes but true battle Quincy are rare. As for the Shinigami they, in the future, would remove themselves from Quincy affairs.
The Quincy were, and still are, proud people and this alliance with the Shinigami was hated by some and embraced by others. Yabusame Takashi became loved and hated by many of his people, though he was still head of the Yabusame family and was shown respect, many believe that is why, since then, his family has been cursed. As time went on, the truce still applies today and the culling of the Quincy was averted.
The Curse and the two Princes
Takashi's decision was thought to be the beginning of the Yabusame family curse. This curse is that two males are born before any female, leaving a horrible imbalance of woman in the family. This also leaves most Yabusame men the inability to find a suitable Quincy mate. This forces some of the males to take on wives from other Quincy families, or worse, humans. Only the true Yabusame bloodlines are thought to be the best and purest, and are the only ones chosen to be battle Quincy from the Yabusame family. They are also called "pure bloods". How other families chose their warriors , it is unknown, but it is law in the Yabusame family that only the pure bloods are battle Quincy.
Takehiko was the first born son of, pure blooded, Sadeo and Jun Yabusame. Jun named her son this because it means the "Hero Prince", and that is how he was viewed. Takehiko would one day become leader of the Yabusame family, as his ancestors before him. Knowing about the curse made Jun heavy hearted, she had never wanted more then two children but, like every woman of the Yabusame family, she desperately wanted a girl. She bought charms, creams, and potions, anything in hopes to raise her chances of getting a girl. She was so determined to break the curse that she would eat foods that were said to increase the chances of a girl.
Late one winter day she had, to her utmost dismay, a son. She wept upon his birth and refused to see him for two weeks, nameless and mostly alone, the baby was comforted by Sadeo. Holding his son up to the light he noticed one strange feature, he was blond. He looked just like Takehiko but, once again, blond. Sadeo named his unwanted son Akihiko meaning the "Bright Prince", due to his light hair. Jun eventually accepted the child, out of duty, but always treated him as a burden and never hid the truth that she never wanted him. Akihiko was five when Jun became happier, she bore her daughter Kamiko, meaning superior child, after that she was nicer to the tow headed child.
Akihiko, being the unwanted and middle child, was cast aside and in turn acted out against the strict Quincy upbringing. Sadeo took an interest in Takehiko, being the future heir, he never seemed to have time for Akihiko, never recognizing his accomplishments. Jun was equally enamored with her daughter and pushed all the men in her life away, choosing Kamiko's company over any others. Akihiko was completely okay with these series of events, he got to know the staff, particularly the butler, John Smithtons. John was an Englishman who now lived in Japan. John, realizing the young masters situation, quickly took to taking after the blond Quincy. As Akihiko grew up he even developed a strange mixed accent, since he learned English from John, this was to his parents dismay but neither of them wanted to take the time to correct it.
He was taunted and laughed at by his fellow Quincy peers, because of his blond hair. So he took to dying his hair black and wearing hats. Akihiko grew up and overtime he showed to have an insanely high IQ (192), an eidetic memory, and just as much talent as a Quincy. This intelligence pushed him through school at a rapid rate, becoming a surgeon twenty. Though him and his brother were close, Takehiko still had a superior attitude towards his younger sibling. The two were always neck and neck, in grades, college, university, med school, but especially Quincy abilities.
After Med school, Akihiko chose to leave his families estate for a local apartment, none complained or tried to stop him. Though he still visits regularly and is apart of Yabusame family affairs, he realized that from birth he had always been a burden. One thing Akihiko insisted upon was taking John Smithtons with him, he would later regret that decision. While at an organic chemistry class, Akihiko felt a hollows presence near-by. Feeling for spiritual pressure, he ran in the hollows direction, on his way noticing he was heading towards his own home, by the time he reached his apartment John was dead. Akihiko executed the hollow without mercy. Afterwards he sat with John's spirit, as he waited for a Shinigami to arrive. He held his, now psuedo-father's, hand saying their goodbyes, he promised he would find him one day in Soul Society. Once the Shinigami arrived, they sent John to Soul Society, and then gave his condolences to Akihiko.
This is where we find Akihiko, purposely distanced from his family, surgeon, and Quincy...
Akihiko yawned and rubbed the sleep from around his eyes, he had been awake for 22 hours straight. Why he has accepted the second shift in the emergency room, he'll never know. Probably because his brother, head chief of staff at the hospital he is employed by, called in a personal favor. He could never say no to Takehiko no matter how much he tried. He remembered back to the days when they were younger, he was always trying to prove himself, man was he naive. Only later did he realize that his brother was only trying to prove himself to their father and the more Akihiko succeeded, the harder it became on Takehiko. So eventually he stopped trying to out do Takehiko and just improved himself, for his own goals.
Leaning back in his chair, he stretches his arm out to grab his coffee on a nearby counter. He takes a sip of the now lukewarm liquid, it is still satisfying. He then realizes he is at the bottom of the cup, cursing the gods, he signs, damn he already needs another cup. Slowly he gets up, stretches, and puts his hand in his pockets then walks towards the nurses station. He loved the nurses station, so many ladies, so little time; a few other doctors stood around an they talked idly. The girls were giggling about something, which instantly brought a cheeky grin on his face. Quietly walking up behind the nurses, he interrupted their giggles.
"Hey Darlin's, I was just thinkin' I was in the mood for something hot." His grin turning into a playful smile. The nurses turned slightly red and giggled, one chimed up.
"Yabusame-san are you talking about coffee?" She got out between giggles.
"Of Course I was. What did you think I meant?" He said flatly.
He continued flirting and the girls continued loving it, until they suddenly got very quiet all looking behind Akihiko. By the reiatsu and the look the nurses faces, he knew it was his brother Takehiko. Akihiko made a high pitched whistle as he spun around, looking directly at his brother and shrugging. They never really had to use words, they were brothers after all, and they seemed to have developed a strange telepathy with each other's moods. Takehiko narrowed his eyes at his younger brother. The two were very similar looking, minus the glasses.
"Aki, I didn't ask you to take this extra shift so you could loiter around the nurses station."
"Who said I was loiterin'?"
"Flirting and loitering are the same thing..."
"Alright, I got it." He cut him off, and considerably louder then he has anticipated, which only caused Takehiko to become more furious. Takehiko adjusted his glasses in annoyance, the glass making a hard glare in Aki's face; he reminded him of his father. Akihiko hated the whole glasses Quincy trademark, he wears contacts most days, even though he admits to looking stunning in glasses. Akihiko sighed heavily. "No reason to get annoyed Nii-san, I was just about to go for a coffee run. Just checkin' if the ladies wanted me to bring them somethin' back."
"Well if that is the case, Aki." He reached into his pocket and pulled out some cash, handing it over to Akihiko. "I have a board meeting an 45 minutes, please pick up the usual, 4 larges."
Akihiko nodded at his older brother, grabbed the money, and shoved it into his back pocket. He hated making coffee rounds for his brother, plus he was enjoying his time at the nurses station. With that he took his leave, removing his lab coat, and replacing it with his light gray trench coat, he exited the hospital.
