Appearance: By most people’s standards Katashi would be judged as a fairly handsome individual, he does make an effort to keep up his appearance as he comes in contact with a lot of different people on a daily basis. His appearance is quite tidy and well kept and usually Katashi has a sweet refreshing scent lingering about himself. While it is very obvious by looking at him that he is no expert in physical power his mental strength far exceeds his physical strength. His stature is accurate for one of his physical age as he stands 178 cm tall and weighs about 60 kg, making him moderate both in length and weight. His intellectual is particularly induced by the pair of glasses that rest comfortably on his nose, the frame being made out of light black plastic material. Behind these glasses rest a pair of gray colored eyes that, more than often, send out of a sense of stability, control and friendliness which is indeed accurate in contrast with his personality. His face bares a gentle smile which can be seen almost every time he converses with people, this being because he harbors a good will towards most of his patients, co-workers and fellow shinigami. On top of that handsome head of his rests his hair, a modest collection of black hairs that form together to form a decent hairdo. These combined physical attributes sketch a pretty clear image of Katashi, a friendly, intelligent and charming individual. Usually Katashi is pretty loyal to what his appearance indicates, calm and collected, however like everyone there are moments were the heat of the situation do take toll on him. While he may lose control of his demeanor at some point it does not take him long to collect himself and move on to cope with the situation.
Katashi’s body is what one would expect from a person who has spent most of his time in the presence of doctors and wounded individuals, having spent most of his time tending to the sick and being educated in the subject of medical science. While not being out of shape in any way it is clear that he hasn’t been working on his physical condition, as he does not have well toned muscles that a shinigami from a more battle oriented division would have. While not having an impressive mass of muscles Katashi does possess the ability to move around rather swiftly, as he has invested time in learning how to be both precise and quick at the same time. His rather light weight helps him in being fast as he isn’t obstructed by his body mass. While Katashi’s body and its features might be interesting to some individuals (most likely the female sort) covering those features is a standard shihakushou uniform that the majority of shinigami wear on a daily basis. Due to the fact that Katashi has an fascination with modern doctors he (oddly enough) wears a white doctor’s coat over his shihakushou (even when not on hospital grounds), which is identical to the one doctors in the world of the living wear. The rest of his 4th division equipment (revitalization pill, shinten, etc.) is usually stored away in his 4th division utility bag, which usually rests on his back (over his doctor’s coat), on a mission out of Seireitei he usually only wears his shihakushou then and leaves his doctor’s coat behind. His zanpakutou is usually with him during his time within the hospital, however he keeps it stored in his office. While it is common to see people carrying their zanpakutou everywhere Katashi thinks it would affect his friendly image if he were to walk around with it. On the occasions when it is needed he picks it up from his office. Katashi’s gigai’s clothing consists out of a white shirt accompanied by a blue tie, black jeans and brown leather shoes.
As a medic it is only natural for him to bear an open approach towards other people, this is clear in the way his body gives out signals. His body language comes over as friendly which makes it easy for people to approach him, while working within the hospital he often the victim of various question about directions and medical procedures which is why it is vital that he bears a helpful attitude. It is rare for a person to see Katashi in a messy state, both mentally and physically. Being an early bird he is usually early to any scene and will always be present in a presentable state, his attitude is usually positive which is why people will rarely see him down or even depressed.
Personality: As a person Katashi is easily read from his appearance, as he is quite true to the signals his body language send out. His helpful attitude towards other people is something that is appreciated and sometimes exploited by most people, however while helpful this does not mean that he is gullible. As an individual Katashi’s most prominent features in terms of personality would be his friendly demeanor, his ability to quickly process thoughts and idea and his stable personality. Due to the fact he comes in contact with people on a daily basis, he has the habit to analyze people and figure out their motives for doing specific things, however this remains on a relatively innocent level. These factors make him an ideal “support pillar” for any organization, which is why he is able to function quite fluently within the regularly chaotic happenings of the hospital. As mentioned before his friendliness helps him out on a daily basis and he feels rewarded by people’s gratitude towards him as he assists them. While his patience might be a rare feature he does know when somebody is abusing his good nature, however he does answer to this in a violent manner, usually he solves this with a calm and often sarcastic approach. Most people notice when having conversed with Katashi that he is a bright individual and is able to quickly analyze a situation, going through his swift thought process he can usually come up with a plan to get the situation under control. His intellectual capabilities allow him to learn a substantial amount out of previous experiences, often he tries to relive those experiences within his mind to analyze the situation once more and correct mistakes that were made on his account.
His stable personality however is something that positively serves him on a daily basis, especially within his actions in the 4th’s hospital. His personality allows him to act as something of a moral compass towards others, when people have troubles with something Katashi is usually willing to give them his take on the situation and give them advice, on the flipside Katashi will also point people to their wrongs and mistakes. When somebody does something not quite legal or acceptable he will give his modest opinion but he will not bring it to them forcefully, usually he handles this tactfully or even in some situations with a silly or sarcastic approach. Rarely he will report someone for doing something wrong as he thinks that people should make their own choices and carry the consequences they cause, however this varies on the severity of the situation. The stability of his personality alongside his mental capabilities make him an ideal subject for various doctors within the hospital to bounce back ideas to when they are brainstorming, as Katashi acts as an assistant within the hospital which he usually does quite frequently. However Katashi’s specialization lies in trauma support, acting as a trauma doctor in emergency cases. During his travels as an apprentice he was often challenged to treat wounds in hard conditions with little supplies, this in particular being something he felt extra satisfied with if successfully performed, which he why he decided to make it his main focus.
While everything about Katashi so far has been positive it is clear that he too has his shortcoming, as every person does. While his medical knowledge and skill might be on par with that of a doctor the fact still remains that Katashi is an assistant, serving pretty much as a secretary and aid to a share of doctors within the hospital (this due to the fact the hospital is understaffed). However the fact that he is an assistant is not due to a lack of skill but rather due to his own choice. Katashi chooses to remain an assistant by choice, this is due to his most apparent flaw. His lack of leadership capabilities. While he perfectly functions within an organization he is unable to direct a large number of people because he doubts his own decisions, in life threatening situations this could cause fatal consequences . This is why he prefers to work with a small amount of people, aid others or alone as a one-man team. His lack of leadership capabilities originate from his own insecurity to make decisions, he fears that his decisions might result in a negative way and backfire. While this might not influence his self esteem on a daily basis, it is apparent that he is doubtful of himself when the time comes when he alone needs to make the call. In the days of his past while under the service of the doctor that educated him it was clear to the doctor that Katashi indeed possessed the potential to become a successful doctor, however it was also clear to the doctor that Katashi needed to overcome his insecurity in order to succeed. The fact that Katashi keeps himself “stuck in one place” by his own choice comes as a frustration towards the person that set him on the path of medicine in the first place, Captain of the 4th Division Takenaka Daichi. While not being angry with Katashi he hopes that one day Katashi will realize that he cannot live in the shadow of another forever and will evolve into a successful doctor as he had hoped. Katashi on the other hand is fearful of what he must do when his captain retires, which is something that is closing in day by day, while not frequently demanding the attention of his captain for advice the fact that he can operate under the management of his captain provides Katashi with solace and peace of mind.
Katashi’s approach to battle is one rather peculiar for a member of the 4th division, while most of the 4th might avoid battle at any cost in order to save others Katashi does not flinch away. His rationalizes this by concluding that if the threat is neutralized then no harm can become others, while if the threat is left alone it will cause more damage. While in no way bloodthirsty or violent minded Katashi does approach battle with a relative calm state of mind, this allows him to clearly focus his attention on his surroundings and evaluate the situations that might come. Usually he will try to keep an ace up his sleeve in order to have an advantage to rely on. By using kidou and various other techniques Takashi is able to avoid direct combat, however this all depends on the situation in which he is present. His priority however is still the safety of others and their medical health.
Strengths: With several things to consider it is clear in which departments Katashi excels above others. His exposure to medicinal science at an early stage has given him great insight into the subject which has its merits in his daily life, reiki has become as a second nature to him as he can manage his energy while using it to an effective level. His good willed nature pays off by itself as it has a positive impact on the people who surround him and on his social life, working at the hospital allows him to meet a numerous amount of people which then in time broaden his knowledge about people. His studies on kidou allow him to perform spells that others might find too complex to pull off, this gives him the required influence on the battlefield as he is able to participate in battle without having to come to close to danger. Finally his intelligence plays a huge factor in his daily life, being able to swiftly analyze and decide alongside with decent agility provide him with a well required advantage to participate in dangerous situation without endangering his own safety.
Weaknesses: While his weaknesses might not be all as clear as his physical shortcomings they are certainly present at all time. As already established his physical strength is what one would expect from a member of the 4th division, the least battle oriented division of the Gotei 13. While not at all a pushover in battle when it comes down to physical strength Katashi will definitely draw the short straw against someone more trained. Besides that there is the fact that Katashi is unwilling to move on from his current position, taking up full responsibility for his own actions proves to be a challenge for him. The fact he rather lives in the shadow of primarily his captain and other doctors limits him to being an aid to a situation rather than somebody who takes charge and solves the problem at hand. His inability to stop doubting his own decisions force him to rely on the judgment of another, while this causes some to unjustly underestimate him it does prevent him from truly being able to step up as a leader figure.
Sealed Zanpakutou: Usually stored elsewhere Katashi is only seen with his zanpakutou on rare occasions, his work within the hospital rarely require him to carry it around which is why he leaves it behind. However this does not mean he has distanced himself from it. The few who have seen Katashi’s zanpakutou can state that Katashi zanpakutou is one kept in a presentable state. Whilst in a pristine state it is a modest sword, being colored in a humble brown color. This brown color is present on the wrappings on the hilt which provide excellent grip, as well the wrappings that are present on the upper part of the scabbard (, the wrappings spanning about 1/3 of the entire scabbard). Both the hand guard as well as the end cap are colored in the same shade of black, the metal of both of these are quite sturdy. The hand guard is in a relatively round shape while the internal structure of the hand guard is filled with several decorative openings. The blade itself is in excellent condition and provides quality sharpness, the length of the blade is of average size. The scabbard is relatively plain and undecorated, it is painted in the same black color as the hand guard and the end cap.
Zanpakutou Spirit: Katashi’s sword like any other zanpakutou harbors a zanpakutou spirit, the name of his sword and spirit is Kiyoikizu. Kiyoikizu manifests within Katashi’s inner sanctum as an ancient dragon, similar to the ones depicted in Chinese mythology. Kiyoikizu is massive in size, towering immensely above Katashi or anyone else with a normal human stature, while it is hard to guess exactly how large Kiyoikizu is it is safe to assume that it borders around 160 feet in length alone. Appearing in the form of a dragon it is obvious that Kiyoikizu’s skin consists out of scales that are colored in a clear white tint, however on specific places on its body (for example its head) there are spots of a bright green color. The scales on his back however are far more rugged and are extremely hard, comparably in density to rock, this serves as measure of protection for the giant creature’s open backside. Kiyoikizu’s facial features consist out of two green tinted whiskers and two small horns, constructed out of something that is similar to ivory, accompanied with these is his pair of yellow eyes that display a sense of wisdom and weariness even. Another noticeable feature is the creature’s huge claws, colored in a black shade, however Kiyoikizu is not require to use these claws to move itself as it has the ability to float and fly around at the greatest of ease. Due to its massive appearance Kiyoikizu’s presence comes over as overwhelming, however its natural aura seems to be one of wisdom and serenity, as it appears to have close ties to the harmony of nature (which is somewhat apparent in its appearance).
The personality of Kiyoikizu however is in some way true to his appearance, while he might come off as overwhelming in appearance his behavior is rather calm and tired, as if he had just awoken from his slumber. Towards Katashi he is tolerant and understanding, bestowing him with his advice in a usual drowsy tone of speech. Kiyoikizu transmits his voice through mental telepathy, not using his mouth to speak. While Kiyoikizu usually prefers to slumber within the confines of Katashi’s inner world both of them converse on a regular basis, as Katashi seeks both the frequent audience and advice of his spirit, allowing him to reflect on his actions and seek the opinion of his spirit. Kiyoikizu harbors a mindset that is quite wise which promotes harmony with one’s own self and nature, the balance of one’s nature within its surrounding. While Katashi does frequently asks for his spirit’s advice Kiyoikizu usually makes Katashi reflect upon his decision and possible other paths he could or can take, rather than giving him the answers he lets him seek them for himself with his guidance. The relationship Katashi and Kiyoikizu shares is something that could be described as similar to a bond a young adult and his elder would have, while they vary much from one another they both seek to learn from each other, often spending time with one another in a calm and behaved manner.
Katashi’s inner world manifests as a hot spring that is located within cave, as it manifests a large spirit the cave in its own right is huge in size as well. In the interior of the cave is rather rugged, gray and brown colored rocks sticking out from the side, ceiling and through the surface of the floor. However the most mentionable thing within is the presence of hot spring, which covers the entirety of the floor’s surface (aside from some big rocks that stick or even tower out of the water). The water has an odd bright greenish color that somehow induces the thought of relaxation, the water has a soothing temperature that causes one to becoming calm when bathing in it, muscle tension decreasing as they become loose by the water’s gentle touch. Due to the water’s temperature a lot of steam is generated, which drifts around the cave, while not directly influencing the ability to see within the cave it adds a rather mystical feel to the cave’s interior. Kiyoikizu usually resides underwater in a deeper section of the hot spring, usually sleeping under the water’s surface until he is needed. Katashi enjoys entering his spirit world as the soothing aura of the place gives him solace and inner peace.
Shikai Incantation:
Sasagu, Kiyoikizu
Sacrifice, Pure Wound
Shikai Category: Kidou Release
Shikai Range: Short Range
Shikai Description: Being released causes Kiyoikizu to diminish in size dramatically, so much that it becomes nothing short of a knife. The transformed sword will take the form of a steel knife, both the blade and the handle being made out of the light gray colored steel. The knife’s blade has a reflecting shine to it and appears to be pristinely clear whilst also being devoid of any scratches or stains. (Only the front of the blade is sharpened.) Rather than running straight the blade runs in a slight arc, like katana, the tip being sharpened at both the front and back side . At the bottom of the handle is a hole that has (upon release) a cloth bandage tied to it (around the bottom of handle and the hole). The cloth bandage appears as ordinary white cloth, the cloth has a smooth quality to it which feels very comfortable when held or attached to a limb. The bandage hangs at the handle’s end with a length of 15 inches. While the reach of the blade has been reduced to the size of 7 inches, the handle being 4.7 inches with no hand guard separating them, it appears as if most of the offensive capability of the weapon has been severely reduced however the lack of reach is compensated by the amazing razor sharpness of the blade. The knife demands a careful and experienced hand to allow it to be wielded properly. While the blade is not one which could make extremely deep cuts (like a sword) it instead causes a wound that bleeds severely, similar to a paper cut, allowing itself to be used as a rather potent offensive weapon. Due to its small size it is hard to block or predict its movement as its light weight allows it to be handled with great ease, however on the downside it puts it at a disadvantage when it needs to block another weapon.
The way the weapon is handled is vital to its offensive capability, yet due to its small size it is a versatile weapon in usage as its light weight allows it to be handled easily. An imaginative mind can easily find creative methods to offensively utilize it, for example using the bandage at the end of the handle. The knife can be swung around by using the bandage to fling it towards an opponent, or can be used to retract the blade if it is knocked out of Katashi’s grasp. In some situations the bandage can even be used to constrict an opponent or their weapon.
Technique Name: Saiseihoutai
(Regrowth Bandage)
Technique Category: Utility
Technique Range: Close Range
Technique Description: While it might not appear like it but Kiyoikizu, in its released state, has its own unique abilities that Katashi can utilize to his own desire, either to save or to harm. One of these abilities is Saiseihoutai, being active upon release as seen by the bandage that dangles at the end of his hilt when his zanpakutou is released. While the bandage itself appears to be made of regular cloth upon closer inspection it becomes apparent that the material of which the bandage is constructed is more than just simple cloth. While the basis of the bandage is indeed cloth it also contains a specific amount of reiatsu, entwined (or infused) alongside the fabric of the cloth. The function that this ultimately serves is a beneficial one, which gives the bandage a unique trait and a supportive task. When the cloth bandage is wrapped around a wound, and absorbs the blood it secretes, it spreads the reiatsu into the wound and spreads through the veins surrounding it. The reiatsu has no direct healing effect but rather it allows reiki to be more easily and swiftly distributed through and around the wound, which allows healing kidou to be more effective without the required cost of more additional reiatsu.
It takes about 6 minutes for the reiatsu within the bandage to spread through and around the wound, after this is done the bandage will lose its unique quality and become an ordinary cloth bandage, preventing it from being reused on another wound. The length of the bandage does not increase the effectiveness of the bandage, the effectiveness will remain the same regardless of the bandage’s length, however if the bandage is too short to cover the whole wound its effectiveness will decrease. While the bandage’s ability might not require any cost of reiatsu from Katashi (healing through kidou takes the same cost as without the bandage) it however does not grow back on its own, once it has been used the previous bandage will become void of its unique function. To reacquire said bandage Katashi must result to Kiyoikizu’s additional ability.
Technique Name: Kyuuinkou
(Absorption Steel)
Technique Category: Offensive
Technique Range: Close Range
Technique Description: While Saiseihoutai can be considered an support ability Kyuuinkou on the other hand is quite the opposite, being of offensive nature. Similar to Saiseihoutai it is also passively active upon the release of Kiyoikizu, however unlike its counterpart it is not an ability that can be visibly noticed, remaining hidden within the steel of the knife’s blade. The steel from which the knife’s blade is constructed is of a unique sort, having the capability to leech reiatsu from an organic life source upon contact, however doing so is not as simple as it sounds as the blade is required to pass through the skin of its victim before it can absorb any spiritual energy. The most common way of doing so would be to cut through the target, allowing the blade to absorb reiatsu as it creates the wound, while this might be the easiest and safest way to do so it is also the most less effective method as the blade only makes brief contact with the target. The most effective way would be to penetrate through the target’s skin by the method of stabbing, this way the blade can remain in the wound and absorb its victim’s reiatsu for a longer period of time. The amount of reiatsu absorbed however depends on the period of time the blade has had contact with its victim, for every second it makes contact with its victim Kyuuinkou absorb a tiny portion of their reiatsu, however it is impossible for the blade to completely drain its victim as Kyuuinkou is unable to drain any more reiatsu when its purpose has been fulfilled. Kyuuinkou’s purpose for absorbing one’ reiatsu however is not for offensive purposes, rather than that it is to cause the previously used bandage to regrow at the end of the hilt.
For every wound it is able to make it drains reiatsu from its target that makes the bandage grow, a small wound would result in the regrowth of 10 inches, a larger one would amount to the regrowth of 16 inches. (One can consider a wound as “small” when the blade attacks but is hampered or the damage is lessened by any cause or effect. A wound is considered “large” when the blade causes a wound with any resistance or lessening of its damage.) This would require the blade to leech up to 5 times of the said amount in order to have absorbed enough reiatsu to fully grow back the bandage, as the maximum length of the bandage is 50 inches. This means however that, upon release, Kiyoikizu is not able to absorb any reiatsu as the bandage is already present when first being released, only after the bandage is used will Kyuuinkou be in effect. Once the bandage has been fully regrown Kyuuinkou will once more refrain from absorbing reiatsu, until the bandage has been used again.

History: The harshness of eternal Winters.[/u]
Before the time his soul got reborn, like any other, Katashi was a human. While his identity was different at that time, it was that human’s soul that eventually gave way to the birth of the person named Katashi. During his time as a human Katashi lived a sad and harsh life, mostly being exposed to the cold face of society. Born into a poor family Katashi had started his life off at a very bad disadvantage. From the very beginning Shibata’s only occupation was roaming the streets as a beggar, looking for kind hearted people who’d offer a poor child some money, and in return Shibata robbed them of their possessions. While Shibata felt horrible for doing so it was a matter of survival, the feeling of hunger overpowered his feeling of guilt. Katashi roamed the winter cold streets, dressed in rags and covered in dirt, searching and searching for anything he could take back home. He was showered with the love and joy of his parents if he returned with something of value, yet when he returned with nothing his father beat him until he was bruised all over. It was a harsh existence for him, while he loved his parents to death at times he was also afraid of them like he was afraid of death. He wanted nothing more than to be able to lift themselves out of the pit life had thrown them in, he wanted to grant his parents a normal life, he wanted to go to school and make friends like normal children. However his motivation was no match for the cold eye society turned towards his kind, beggars, lowlifes, thieves, these people had no place among them and were best left in the cold to die. The dreams he had filled him up so much that his head held only a few memories, one was the love and fear he felt for his parents, and the other was the cold. The constant cold that he endured during his wandering, as if he was trapped in the constant cold of winter, even during the most hot of summer days he felt as if he was stuck in the freezing grasp of misfortune. To him life seemed like an everlasting shower of hail, which he was pelted with day after day. But for some reason, whatever light was within him, drove him to keep going to keep living a life that wasn’t worth living.
However it was only a matter of time before death fixed his malevolent gaze upon Katashi and grinned to the fate he would bestow on the boy. As death grew closer, the little worth Katashi had left to live his life started to fade, luck had completely turned his back on the boy. A difficult time struck, the economy went into recession and people were starting to have financial troubles, this in time had an effect on the little Katashi made by begging. The little he scavenged on a daily basis sank from little to nothing. Between the hunger in his stomach and the beating of his father Katashi only had grief, his dreams shattered. With every hit from his father’s hand Katashi’s will to live left his body, eventually every shred of will had escaped him, as his body laid motionless on the ground his parents became aware of his fate. However they were wrong, while they gathered little they had and left the boy’s heart was still beating, faintly but still. In a last attempt to show his love the boy crawled behind in the trail of his parent’s footsteps, a last attempt to show his love for them. But after all death got his wish, the boy’s remaining strength fled from his body as his mind descended into a void of darkness.
It was not the bruises his father had bestowed on him that had killed the boy at the age of 7, but rather the cold of the winter’s touch. The coldness of a world of winter.
The Spring of warmth.[/u]
While the time his soul spent inside his human body may have been brutal, the fates smiled upon him when his spirit was reborn into world of Soul Society. It was a joyous occasion, birth had reached the Shibata family. Rather then it being a single child it was a twin that was bestowed upon the mother of Katashi and his brother. The Shibata family was nothing like a noble family, more specifically they served one. The Nakatomi clan had saved their family from being wiped out in the past, as a reward the Shibata family offered their immense gratitude. In order to express their gratitude the Shibata family swore servitude of themselves and their heirs to the Nakatomi clan and their heirs for a number of generations. Acting as indentured servants in the service or the Nakatomi clan. While the Shibata family might have been serving the Nakatomi clan they were rather content with their situation, if the Nakatomi clan hadn’t saved them they wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the virtues of their existence at all, they were well taken care for by their masters though. Even though they served the Nakatomi clan they did take good care of their servants, they offered them dorms to sleep in, provided them with quality food and made sure any children born were healthy, so that they in turn could serve and give birth to the heirs that would serve them until their gratitude was payed.
Katashi’s fate might have been set in stone, due to his loyalty to his family, but this did not stop his mother and father from showering him with the love he deserved. As a baby Katashi did not come short of anything, he had the love of his parents, the watchful eye of the Nakatomi clan monitoring his health and the presence of his brother to keep him company. While his brain had not developed enough to understand it yet, it was clear that this was bliss. As Katashi grew and grew his fate began to draw closer, as he eventually reached the age where he was going to be taught in the ways of serving the Nakatomi clan. As his body reached the age of 10 he was taught how to do chores and other tasks that the Nakatomi clan desired him to do. While this was hard it felt rewarding in a way, he felt proud even. He was walking the footsteps of his ancestors, while it might not be the most grand way of living he felt satisfied with his life as nothing in his life was missing. During his time there he even witnessed the birth of the heir to the Nakatomi clan, the daughter that would further their bloodline.
Many years passed as Katashi’s servitude carried on, while he lacked nothing and felt at ease with his existence there was another who did not. His brother, Shibata Kiyoshi, with the passing years had grown tired of his life of servitude and did not consider it just that he was bound to the promise his ancestors had made to the Nakatomi clan. The gratitude they promised the Nakatomi clan shouldn’t be forced upon him, he felt that he should be able to choose for himself whether they truly deserved this gratitude. While Katashi was close with his brother in his earlier years, as Kiyoshi’s resentment grew their relationship grew more distant. Eventually for the first time a member of the Shibata family left the service of the Nakatomi clan. Katashi’s brother demanded from his own family that they would negotiate the terms of his resigning from servitude to the Nakatomi clan. Everyone in Shibata family had a choice to leave, if they were not content with their current state they were free to negotiate their terms of resigning, however within the Shibata family there existed an unspoken rule. If one resigned from service the debt the Shibata family had towards the Nakatomi clan would grow, as the Shibata clan would take on the debt that their resigning member owed towards the Nakatomi clan for being under their care up to that point.
Many members of the Shibata family had suspected that this eventually might happen, so they granted Katashi’s brother to right to resign from service, allowing him to craft his own fate within Rukongai. The Shibata family agreed to take on the debt Katashi’s brother owed towards the Nakatomi clan, as he was one of their own. Katashi however did not accept this easily, he accused of his brother of being selfish, putting his own interests above that of his own family. However with his brother gone he realized that blaming him would do no good, yet he felt remorse over the loss of his only brother. In order to distract Katashi from his sadness Katashi’s grandmother decided to educate him in medicine, the knowledge she possessed on the matter she passed on to him during the many practice sessions and studies they both shared. However it was only a matter of time before Katashi’s mind began to drift outside of the confines of his home once more, he thought of his brother and eventually wondered about the world outside the walls of the Nakatomi clan’s castle.
It was only a matter of time before Katashi’s family began noticing his increased interest in the world outside of his home. Katashi had proven himself useful and had done his best to aid in his family as best as he could, both by labor and by the medicinal skill his grandmother had passed on to him. However the Shibata family decided it was too much of a shame to limit Katashi’s skills to use within their home, they believed the skills he possessed could do more good in the world outside of the castle. After consulting with the Nakatomi clan they negotiated the terms of Katashi’s resigning, eventually they reached a consensus and granted Katashi leave from service. Katashi was shocked by this has did not expect his family to take on the debt of another of their own, while he did not jump at the opportunity he did know that his family offered him this out of their best intentions. He felt that it would rude to refuse so he accepted their offer and promised them to show his worth, to bring honor to the Shibata family from whom he so proudly descended. After packing his belongings Katashi set out into the world he had yet to discover, he knew that he would rarely see his family from that point on but he did not want their efforts to go to waste. Beginning his venture within a world of opportunity.
The wisdom of Autumn.[/u]
Over time many years had passed since the day Katashi had left servitude within the Nakatomi clan’s castle. He had set up a small pharmacy and doctor’s cabinet, which he used to attract sick and injured civilians to. While it was to get supplies he did his best to bargain and ensure that his supplies felt into the hands of people who truly needed them. This was his way of bringing honor to his family, by helping other. He had spent a few years of his life searching for his brother, however whenever he found his brother’s trail it always turned cold in the end. His brother had made it his profession to make sure he could not be tracked. From the little information Katashi had obtainted about his brother he could deduct that has brother had left the feelings he felt towards his family behind, as had taken refuge to the world of criminality. His brother had taken a vital position in the formation of a gang called the “Black Knives”, while this gang performed criminal activities they did this in a manner of lesser violence. Instead of causing riots and murdering other gangs for territory they invaded gangs with spies and set the gang up against itself, eventually once they had eradicated themselves the Black Knives settled in the area. In order to insure their dominance they forced merchants in the area to pay their “protection money” so that a random gang wouldn’t burn down their store, this extortion method proved effective. However strangely enough it appeared that Katashi’s brother was aware of his presence within Rukongai, and still seemed to care enough to refrain from making Katashi a victim to his horrible methods as well, as Katashi’s pharmacy was left untouched by the gang’s activity. Systematically the Black Knives began controlling a huge amount of territory, so much even that they began appearing as a criminal threat on the radar of the Gotei 13, however due to their underground nature they were hard to fully dispose of.
Katashi continued with his work, using the small amount of knowledge in medicine he had gained from his grandmother beyond its initial use. However eventually misfortune caught up with katashi as a huge riot broke out that involved an entire region of Rukongai. With violence, chaos and murder everywhere Katashi could not escape harm and eventually was mortally wounded. While his life dangled on a string he cursed his fate and his inability to keep performing his task. As the riot became severe the Gotei 13 sent out a force to counter this threat, and with an advantage in numbers and experience they resolved the matter at an amazing speed. While Katashi’s life began slipping away death’s cold presence crept near.
However by a wild twist of fate he was saved by the man that would eventually give him a new cause, the person none other than the 4th Division Captain Takenaka Daichi. In the aftermath of the riot the 4th Division moved in to heal the wounded, Katashi’s case was severe and with luck on his side Katashi’s life was saved by the most qualified man in this Division. Katashi however questioned the man’s motives for saving him, why did he save him? Takenaka Daichi left him with the words: “I saved your life so that you in turn will continue to save the life of another, and so that that person in his time might do the same for his fellow kin. This way we can truly improve the state of the world.”. These words inspired Katashi and drove him to keep doing his best, the words he said made sense to him.
Takenaka Daichi eventually left for Seireitei once more, but he left Katashi with one last parting gift. Katashi was introduced to a friend of the Captain, a friend which he had met during his service within the Gotei 13. The man was to become Katashi’s mentor, he would instruct him in the ways of healing. The doctor’s name was Kobayashi Hisashi, or to Katashi, Kobayashi-sensei. Kobayashi-sensei, much like Takenaka Daichi, was a well taught individual in the field of medicine with decades of experience. He had devoted his life to acting as a traveling doctor, going through Rukongai, assisting wherever he could. As a doctor with medicine it was obvious that he was a constant magnet for danger, as gangs hunted doctors to get money or medicine. However Kobayashi-sensei’s skills were not in medicine alone, as his skill with his wooden sword and fists were only matched with his skill to heal others.
Decades passed as Katashi traveled with Kobayashi-sensei, Katashi’s apprenticeship was a journey that would make him traverse the vast size of Rukongai. The doctor’s methods and wisdom were passed on to Katashi, while his lessons and teachings were strict Katashi proved to be a faithful student, as he never strayed from his path. Learning the methods of practicing medicine with the lowest amount of supplies and in the worst conditions proved to be a difficult task, however through determination and effort Katashi managed to get a vast grip on the art of medicine. Taking in a specialization on emergency trauma support, in short a trauma doctor. Eventually Katashi proved himself a worthy apprentice, mastering practically everything the doctor had thought him. However one thing remained that Katashi could not overcome, his insecurity. When the life of another was in Katashi’s hands his inability to make his choice proved to be something that still needed to be overcome, however Kobayashi-sensei believed that this would eventually be overcome in the passing of time.
However Kobayashi-sensei would not live to see such a day. After years of travel Kobayashi-sensei died of old age, having lived his life to fullest he died without a single regret. He was proud of what Katashi had become and he entrusted him with his blessing, to do with his life what he truly wanted, much like he had did with his. As Katashi was now alone again he began questioning what was next for him, was he to follow his master’s example and become a wandering doctor? The feeling of insecurity began to take hold of him again. He could not do what his master had did, not just yet. He still needed guidance, which is why he decided to find and request the teachings of the man who had set him on this path to begin with. In the academy his understanding of medicine would only grow as he would be educated in the spiritual art of medicine, known as reiki.
In order to reach Takenaka Daichi he had to become a shinigami, he had to join the 4th division. As his new goal was set he marched for the shinigami academy.
The academy did well for him as his potential in the field of medicine was easily noticed, as such he was put on extra courses in the art of medicine at an early stage, to sharpen his skills. Katashi using the vast amount of study material the academy had to offer allowed him to become more like his teacher, steadily allowing Katashi the use the art of bakudo and reishi. Have being a student for considerable time already proved useful as he had little problem fitting himself into the routine of study and practice. While potential in medicine and spells, his skill with the sword was average, as such he was considered a prime student rather than a genius. One the feats that vastly served to improve the eventual final results of his record was his assistance during a hollow outbreak that happened within the academy walls. While not present during the moments of battle, Katashi was one of the first to arrive after the battles and lend his assistance in the form of first aid. This feat was added to his record as a recommendation and allowed him to be recruited into the 4th division with high praise.
For a considerable amount of time Katashi served in the 4th, under Takenaka Daichi, however it was not long before Katashi learned of his captain’s plans of retirement. Being of old age his captain carried out his duties while also looking for a suitable to hand over the torch too. While not having found a suitable person for a vast period of time, eventually the shinigami Darake Kitoushi was appointment to be the new head of the 4th division. Katashi struggled with his captain’s departure for quite a while, especially since the new head seemed to be a questionable man to say the least. Katashi was left with some soothing words by his former captain, telling him to serve under the new head as if he was serving under the previous. If he could do so then only then would be able to evolve from student to teacher. As such Katashi took his former master’s words to heart and did as he asked, embarking a new challenge.

The rumbling of thunder filled the darkened skies above the dusty streets of Rukongai, people running about trying to find that tiny spot of cover to shield themselves of the impending river that would poor from the skies. As drops began to pelt onto his head with rapid velocity Katashi took off his silk brown jacket and pulled it over his head.
”Senseiiii… Why don’t we find cover like the rest? I don’t want to get wet, I’ll get a cold.”
Katashi’s master, walking in front of him with his back turned did not face his student as he complained. His master had grown accustomed to his whining and knew that eventually he would grow out of it and embrace the elements of nature like he had done during his journeys as an apprentice. The master’s feet stopped and he finally turned to his student, his green eyes of wisdom facing him, his posture giving of a sense of age. A body that has lived a harsh life but that has rewarded him with the gift of patience, his hair as gray as he is wise. Katashi in turn stopped his movement and looked towards his mentor with curious eyes, perhaps this time they would find cover in some bar where he could have some tea? Or perhaps they would just march on like the previous 15 times.
”Young one, to be one with nature is to be one with the elements that shape our life. The life that gives birth to lives that we set out to save.”
As expected Katashi listened to his master’s preaching with about half an ear, while he understood what he was trying to say the feeling of wetness overpowered his body more the feeling of wisdom the master’s words contained. He questioned the logic behind the master’s reason, walking in the rain makes you realize the worth of life? As the citizens began placing everything that could catch some rain water out in front of their porches he saw some truth in the master’s words. Perhaps he should not be so quick to voice his complaints, after all he should aim to become more like his mentor. At that moment Katashi violently sneezed, directly in the face of his mentor who watched him only inches away. Sprinkling water and various other fluids into the vision of the well aged man. With his wrinkled hand he reached into his pocket and revealed a white piece of cloth which he rubbed his face with, the cloth rapidly starting to become drench due to the downpour. His other hand steadily beginning to tighten its grip on his wooden stick which acted as a makeshift cane.
”So… Shelter might not be such a bad idea? No? My treat?”
With a swift swing the master’s stick collided with the young man’s head, leaving a bump in its wake that would fill the young man with the lesson he need to learn. However before the lesson came the pain of his actions.
