Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another. This is the first law of thermodynamics.
With each energy conversion from one form to another, some of the energy becomes unavailable for further use. This is the second law of thermodynamics.
These two rules I had learned the hard way when I was called upon during the second world war. With the Earth essentially tearing itself apart by the seams, we were in red alert for many years. And though we were ready for deaths by bullets, bayonets and even explosives there was still something we never truly took into account. I was a captain of the tenth division when it happened. I lead my men into Nagasaki with the expectation of multiple deaths from both the Americans and the Japanese. I was prepared to fight an army of hollows that would be attracted to the considerable level of souls in the area. But what I wasn't prepared for was what the humans would do in order to stop a war.
My lieutenant had given me a detailed report about no signs of hollow activity in his designated area of Hiroshima. It was strange to me since there should have been some kind of activity. But as we spoke, communications were cut in a heartbeat. Terrified for my lieutenant, I knew I had to get there to see what was going on, but the seated officers were looking at something in the sky. Turning my head, I saw the plane and it seemed to have dropped something from high above. I remembered in previous reports how the Germans used tactics of repeated bombs on English territories. But why only one bomb? Of course what I didn't realize was that it wasn't just an explosive; what I was witnessed to was the drop of the second nuclear bomb.
When I came to, I thought that my head was going to be ripped apart. All I could hear were the screams of pain in my men as I staggered to my feet. I found a handful of survivors; however, my lieutenant was destroyed in the blast. I never could imagine a human wielding a power so great that it could destroy a soul reaper. But here we are, and what little we had left were being evacuated back to the Soul Society. However, what we didn't factor was that the bomb changed us.
At first I thought my ability to sense reiatsu was compromised only because I was in the middle of an explosion. But with a detailed search there was nothing to sense. It was like all spiritual presence was stripped from the cities. To make matters worse, my team was infected as well. We were branded as monstrous due to the advancement of Man. Those of us who were not killed were used for experiments by the twelfth division to figure out what we were. But even being an experiment was nothing compared to those who suffered. They were unstable, their bodies vaporizing into nothing as whatever afflicted us began to eat away at our bodies. It wasn't like the poison of the hollows. This poison was something entirely different.
After fighting my way out of the Soul Society, it had come to my attention that what we were poisoned by was what the humans called "nuclear radiation". Some of the soul reapers who were far past the cities saw people who's hair and teeth were falling out. Some even had damaged the connective tissues of their skin. But that was only in human bodies. For us it was much worse. In a manner of speaking, we were time bombs. Those of us who were unable to contain the energy destabilized and vanished into nothingness. However, to those who were alive we gained the ability to use this new energy. But this is not without a price for if we are not careful, we'd share the fate of our comrades.
That was when we were considered "Dead Zone". Souls who were formed in an area devoid of spiritual presence until our reiatsu is filled with the alien energy. We were marked for death, stripped of our rank and honor. I watched for many years how quick soul reapers who have never dealt with this turn on each other. Practically tear each other limb from limb. And it is not just soul reapers either. Hollows are also poisoned by the energy as well. But in their case if a clean hollow eats a dead zone spirit, then they become poisoned. That is when I decided to create a place for all dead zone to call home.
It will be hard, but if they wish to keep living then it is in everyone's interest to work as a team. It doesn't matter anymore who we are. If a soul reaper find a dead zone, they are to be killed on sight. That is why all of the original soul reapers who joined had to forfeit their names to hide their identities. Even I had to get rid of my old name. The captain is dead, and there is only Lucifer; a dead zone who is able to move the earth.
