In this thread you’ll find some advice on how to give your application a little more punch. This site is of a literate/advanced level, and as such we do not wish to see hastily-written descriptions. This post should get the ball rolling for you, should you feel you are in a bit of a creative slump (we all have days like that, not to worry).
This is where you’ll describe what your characters looks like, what they wear. But don’t just shoot that short like I’ve done now, tell us why they do so, whom did they get their eyes, skin tone, hair color, etc, from. Also describe how something matches the other, the feeling of it. You can even say how the character used to look like, and why they changed, if they did. What about accessories? There is a whole bunch of them, and few people use none. If you are describing a girl character, by no means this topic shall be short, right? After all, females love bags and shoes, necklaces and rings, ear rings, clothes in general.
But you don’t have an excuse for a short appearance even if you’re playing a boy. They may say they don’t care about what they wear but everyone has their style. There are some boys that only use baggy stuff, but then we have those who prefer things tighter. Why is that? Maybe that is because their muscles are very well worked out, or not so they prefer to hide underneath the bagginess. Or maybe they think otherwise, they may prefer to look thinner than the muscled boys do. Try to mix their personality inside their appearance, we all know it does influence.
Some people think this bit to be the worst thing about applications, but I must say, with the right information you can turn this into the easiest thing ever. After all, personality has the most important of them all; hence it is according to this that you’ll play the character. One’s personality can be influenced by how they grew, so do bring in history to this topic as well. A person is really mea when they’ve been treated badly by their parents, or those whom he thought to be the closest. But then, if a person gets too much care from their parents, or guardians, they can turn to be quite spoiled and stuck up. But it doesn’t have to like that; even if a person was badly treated then can act like a sweetheart, none the less. It depends on who the person is. But then again, a person can be looking up to someone else, and that is why they are acting the way they are.
In this topic we get to be the psychologist. It is fun, really, and cannot be short either. But, no one is perfect, either, so we cannot have a character being all nice, loving everyone, being the one everyone likes. We all have something bad within us; it can be that the character gets jealous when they see something they’d like to have, but they don’t nor can’t, or it can be that they get depressed when they see something because it reminds them of something else. Or it can be that they get tired of people when they start acting in a way they dislike, or that the character is too strict. It is your say; all you have to do is explain with all the details.
This is the topic which needs no explanation. However, because I am very nice, here goes some great tips: You can begin with how the character’s parents met and how was their life together at the beginning. Were they planning to have a baby? If so were they happy to be a boy/girl? When the baby was born, how was he/she? Healthy/weak, heavy/light, big/short, did the baby cry a lot at night, or he/she was quiet? As a young child was the character clever, outgoing, shy, silly? Tell us if it was easy for the parents to handle the kid. What about siblings? Were they born before this character or after? Did they get well together? How was the characters’ first day at school? Did he/she like it? What about pets? Do they have any? If not why, if yes, when did they get their first one and was there a special reason? Does the pet influence he/she in their current life?
When did they first played/see/etc the thing that is now their main hobby? Everyone has a hobby; tell us why your character’s is like so. When did they have their first crush? Where did they live at first (this you cannot forget, along with where were they born)? If they moved towns, how did such event affect on them? Did they like the places they frequented? Where were they most happy to be, why, with whom, what got in the way of something changing if there had a change? How do they feel now about their past? Do they wish to have done it differently? What do they plan for their future?
See, there is a whole bunch of you can say. Just don’t go straight to the point of the middle of their life. Write about how their family liked them and vice versa. Talk about their current friends, and their ways of relating to people nowadays. Tell us about why and how they got to where they are in life in the first place, do they like it there now, or not anymore? Tell us everything!
Use your imagination to write about all that is possible on earth - that is why we have it! Remember to use full stops, commas (it comes in very handy, since we all hate short and repetitive sentences), begin with capital letters and always end with a dot. Do not use slang, and if you do, put them inside quotes (‘like this’), and never, ever, use chat speak. Those are the keys to literacy, and it helps a lot in real life as well. Follow them strictly and I bet that your essays, papers, whatever you write, will come out a lot better - and if they are to be graded, I really think their grade will rise!
