Shinigami---1st Division  Leadership and OperationsThe division to which all others look to for direction, information, and coordination among the guard squads. Even lower ranked members of this squad can assume leadership of broken squads and others of a higher rank, though the commands of a Captain are still outside their bounds. Additionally they are those most familiar with Soul Society law. They are specifically allowed to declare someone temporarily unfit for command in special situations or hold a temporary arrest. ---2nd Division  Special Forces and DetainmentMost familiar with the stealth and black ops mission, these members are singular individuals who are usually very fluent with hand to hand skills to deal with problems silently. Usually this division is one made of assassins and support for various sensitive operations. As well they handle the detainment and detention of criminals in which as well require unparalleled unarmed skills as zanpakutou cannot be used inside prisons. Being primarily a military branch of soul society they work in tandem with the third division in gathering of information and ninth in detaining criminals. ---3rd Division  Observation and InformationThis division is one that focuses rather far less on combat and instead of the gathering of information so that other individuals may have a better chance against difficult opponents. Furthermore they usually handle bakudou and a shikai in which to delay or disable the enemy so they may retreat or use what could be seen as underhanded methods. This division attempts to stop them and know their enemies before they step foot on the battle field. This division works in tandem with the second to inform them of sensitive targets, as well as the ninth in monitoring the Gotei's possible criminal parties. Additionally they work with the fourth and twelfth in the dividing of the information that suits the particular divisions function. ---4th Division  Trauma and Triage"Please be quiet while in the hospital, because... after all, as long as your in here... your lives are in our hands." These singular individuals are those who process an innate ability to manifest healing energy called Kaishō. As such these shinigami focus on medical knowledge rather than combat skills starting in their second year of schooling. Their headquarters, The Coordinated Relief Station Hospital is a large building which houses the sick and injured, constantly bustling with activity at all hours. In the field forward camps are set up as temporary infirmaries and the division is divided into several relief teams so they may be placed in strategic locations to provide emergency first aid as swiftly as possible. Preventing the advent of casualties both at home and on the battlefield, Soul Society could not function without their efforts. Despite this fact they are often looked down upon by others as weak, particularly harsh are the eleventh. As such they are pushed to be in charge of cleaning the sewer system that connects all of Soul Society. They can often be seen providing support to all divisions on a number of occasions; such as entering the scene with the eighth to provide backup, on the front lines alongside the eleventh, and even in the twelfth division labs in matters that concern biology. ---5th Division  Tactical KidouThe bookworms of the Gotei Thirteen, these individuals did not rise through physical merit. Instead their training was in the rusty tomes of times past and on the training fields to practice their aim with the particularly devastating spells they command. Previously this division was unspecialized, but absorbed the kidō corp due to lack of members. This division requires someone to devote the mass of their focus on demon arts possibly specializing in the rarely obtained offensive hadō. Often this means they take a backseat on the battlefield in order to provide fire support unabated as possible. This means they often work alongside divisions like the eighth and eleventh using them as distractions in order to fire off their more powerful spells uninterrupted despite the fact they are looked down upon for their lack of physical power. Additionally they often correspond with the thirteenth in order to provide the best teachers possible for classes on the demon arts. ---6th Division  Nobility and HonorWith grace and dignity the members of this division are either of noble decent or still process a rather well of income and travel in the same circles. More over this is no squad of those with their nose in the air, infact the opposite. These division members are devoted to upholding not only the structure of Soul Society, but it's honor and dignity as well. Usually bound by these codes, they don't agree with other squads methods and make it clear that only working in the light will one retain the dignity the Gotei deserves. Due to the strong influence of the nobility they correspond providing great pressure on the movements of the first in decisions of a law making nature. As well they work alongside the seventh division in seeing all criminals are brought to justice under the full weight of the law. ---7th Division  ExecutionersWith a most ominous title, often the linage of Captain has a tradition of wearing a most intimidating mask to strike fear in the enemy. For this is entirely their purpose, to carry out the weight of the guillotine. Made up of those with no qualms about killing, often this division will finish off the enemies the others don't have the stomach to. As well their presence on the battlefield often will cause the enemies to shudder as they know the fight is as well as over. This factor however is entirely one of reputation and the last history of either arrive on the battlefield to early for the enemy to fear, or becoming entirely absent, has greatly damaged their reputation. Often they can but head with the second division, preferring to execute criminals rather than detain them. Working alongside the sixth division they as well contain a strong sense of justice, though usually for different reasons. At times they get along very well with the eleventh for likeness in a taste for direct combat, though these individuals prefer to end the battle as quickly as possible savoring the end result rather than the process. ---8th Division  The ReservesAlways ready at a moments notice these are the warriors who excel at response above all else. Always dispatched as backup these shinigami are the ones who will always give others a sigh of relief upon their appearance as they signal the cavalry has arrived. These silent guardians lie in wait for disturbance and as a result often work with every other division. In particular they tend to arrive on scene with the fourth to reinforce a key position. Additionally they can be dispatched with the fifth to act as a distraction for the spell casters. Often they can be dispatched to reinforce the front lines along side the eleventh and there is a sense of mutual respect among them. ---9th Division  Investigations and Internal AffairsWith both a keen intellect and a well composed skill with a blade, these are the shinigami who both inspect the odd occurrences without explanation and are responsible for keeping a constant eye on their allies. As such they correspond with the second in the capture and detainment of criminals. Additionally they work in concert with the Third Division for intelligence, the purpose is entirely different as these are the specific field investigators who put themselves in harms way constantly in search for truth. The members of this division usually have a strong in group sentiment, afraid of traitors that could be anywhere. Working alongside the sixth division, they as well have a strong sense of self entitlement and drive to see justice carried out. ---10th Division  Navy & Elemental CoreA most odd division, this is one that specifically places those with particular atunement to a natural elements. Though those with elemental zanpakutou are peppered throughout the Gotei Thirteen, only here do they flourish to their maximum potential. Here they can train under those who also find similar traits to their power and learn how to harness these capabilities to their maximum extent. Not only this, but these members are masters of teamwork, flowing their powers together to create devastating combinations. Additionally under the reign of the most recent captain, a number of water element users entered the division. This division gained an additional designation to place it's members in the most apt position functioning as a sort of naval force. Having control over all the world's water means this division guards the greatest territory of the world as well as strengthening the members water zanpakutou. ---11th Division  Combat OperationsThe strong arm of the Gotei and absolutely essential to the front line. If there is a fight, these guys are the first on scene and usually the last ones to leave. Focusing on brute force or even a particular style of physical weapon these are masters of not only strength, but finesse with an usual object. Though many are all to eager fodder, there are those with a practiced hand and devastating mind for combat that set themselves apart. Due to the nature of the division it attracts many of the unsavory, yakuza types. They essentially work alongside all the divisions acting as a front line barrier or distraction, though their are a few divisions they are more often seen beside. The fourth and fifth are often seen nearby despite the fact they look down upon the non combative types in addition to the twelfth. In turn they themselves are looked down upon by the sixth as animals or brutes. Often there is a sense of mutual respect between the eighth and eleventh as often the reserves come to their rescue. They have a complex relationship with the seventh as they both love combat, though the eleventh enjoy the act itself rather than the end result putting them at odds with those who seek to end it quickly. ---12th Division  Research and DevelopmentKnown as the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, these shinigami are responsible for the advancement of the Gotei Thirteen's technology. This division is typically made up of the bookworms who work solely in a laboratory capacity. Though nearly ever seen outside of the lab and equally rarely seen in a battlefield, many have abilities to poison and distract an enemy as to deviate the fight from a physical nature. With minds that constantly run on full steam, these are the true thinkers of Soul Society who approach situations with a practiced curiosity to solve situations in an all to calculated manner. There are several sub-labs within the division such as the Reinō Spiritual Ability Research Facility which develop new technology, the Spiritual Wave Measurement Lab which monitors the balance of the living world to ensure stability, and the Communication Research Section which oversees communication between worlds. This division works alongside the fourth in areas that involve biology, such as the anatomy of hollows. Additionally they work alongside the third in the gathering of information on the enemy, though the twelfth do it in a scientific capacity. This makes for an odd relationship with the third due to the fact the individuals of the twelfth are always under close watch by both the third and the ninth. Often this division is plagued by overly "zealous" individuals who are visited by the ninth, never to be seen from again. Additionally they provide teachers for the thirteenth in order to properly instruct and recruit members interested in scientific pursuits. ---13th Division  Senkaimon Gate Control & TeachingSome could say that no other division is more intimately invested in the future of Soul Society than the Thirteenth. Here they perform two very specific tasks, the first of which operates the senkaimon for travel and polices those who go back and forth between the dangai. These individuals also insure through their vigilance that there are no surprise attacks by controlling the grand barrier. This takes a very large staff and a good deal of proper coordination to which every person within Soul Society relies upon. Furthermore these are the teachers who create the genius shinigami of tomorrow and run the Shino Academy. This is no small task as this requires the teaching in nearly every aspect of shinigami specialty and skills. This division often works alongside the third in monitoring passage through the dangai precipice world, as well as the twelfth in the repair and maintenance of the vital street sweeper Kōtotsu. This division additionally gathers teachers from the fourth, fifth, eleventh, and twelfth in order to gain the best instruction for it's members.
