The 12th division is in charge of the scientific development within Seireitei; as such they are responsible for inventing and utilizing many devices and substances. Within this thread you can find a few of the most notable inventions the 12th division is responsible for, many of which are still in use to this day. Note that many of these inventions are rare, unique or difficult to produce, as such many of them are only used by members of the 12th division, as others do not have free access to them (except if stated otherwise).
Hojiku-Zai (Flesh-mending Drug)
[Rare resource, 12th Division only]
Upon discovering an exceedingly rare floral organism with exceptional qualities, the 12th division began researching it and developing methods to utilize the organism to its fullest. By nature the organism has the ability to restore damaged tissue and cells at a startling speed, by transforming this into a liquid form (coupled with other chemicals) the 12th was able to turn it into a viable curing agent. It quickly became hailed as the most effective and revolutionary healing agent in the history of Soul Society, being able to cure most injuries within seconds. Yet they stumbled upon a massive hurdle. This so called "regeneration serum " proved to be too effective, causing cells to grow back too quickly, causing massive tumors within the test subjects. (In some cases even growing extra appendages.) Eventually, after countless hours of devising theories and testing, the scientific division was able to circumvent this issue. By mixing in cells from a host, during the process of creating the serum, it became possible to allow a symbiotic relationship between the serum and the host's cells. Meaning that the serum can be used to its full extent on the individual who's cells were used, however there were many downsides coupled with this compromise. For one, the combining of cells with the serum only produces a single dose, a single use dose for that matter. The process of creating this symbiotic relationship is very delicate and has a massive area for failure, causing the serum to be rendered useless. On top of this, the use of the serum is extremely painful, as it forcefully regenerates cells at a rapid pace without giving the body time to adapt (causing crippling pain spikes for an extended period of time). Considering the rarity and expensiveness of the resources required to make the regeneration coupled with the possible area of failure, the risk is often not worth taking. Additionally, the time required to create this serum is surprisingly lengthy, which prevents it from being an effective source of medicinal aid during emergencies (except if a dose was already prepared in advance).
O.S.C. (Ōin Suppression Container)
[Common resource, accessible to every division]
Shortly after the Ōin was split into several fragments, the Gotei 13 began forging plans to secure these pieces. While there was no effective procedure to locate them, aside scanning every last part of both the physical and spiritual realms, the idea was proposed to assemble containers to safely secure & store these pieces once these are discovered. While little is truly known about the Ōin, on a scientific level, it has been confirmed that its individual fragments are prone to lay dormant for extended amounts of time only to suddenly release burst of spiritual energy. It is during these flares that they are often discovered by any of the spiritual forces, usually resulting in a clash between rival groups to obtain these fragments. In order to prevent that shinigami whom have managed to obtain a piece of the Ōin, the 12th division's greatest minds pooled their efforts to create a device that effectively manages to conceal any trace of the fragment's reiatsu completely. While entirely masking a spiritual energy, so that it becomes undetectable, is usually a virtually impossible task, the 12th division has succeeded at creating a device that can do this on a minimal scale using state-of-the-art technology.
Due to the lack of research performed on the Ōin (as such had been prohibited by Seireitei law) creating a container that masks it presence appeared to be an impossible task. The common knowledge that existed regarding the artifact served little in the development process. A breakthrough however was achieved when a theory was proposed that eventually led to the creation of the device branded as OSC. The OSC (Ōin Suppression Container) functions rather simplistically, having little to no procedure to make it functional. To activate it, one simply has to insert a piece of the Ōin into it, everything else is done automatically. The brilliance of its design lies in the fact that it effectively uses the Ōin's power against itself, using its own power to secure it. Once inserted the OSC's transparent outer casing reverses the spiritual energy, passively emitted by the Ōin, and sends it back at an accelerated and altered state. The omnipotent nature of the Ōin assures that rather than destroying the fragment all together, the two colliding streams of reiatsu create a barrier around the fragment. The intensity and constant rate of this collision leads this barrier to become something beyond a simple layer of shielding, rather it forms a dimensional warp on a miniature scale. The fragment inside this dimensional warp is effectively in an entirely different "plane of existence" for as long as it remains within this container. It is this unique process that allows it to become entirely undetectable for as long as it remains concealed within the OSC.
The genius of this process however is only possible because of the Ōin itself, naturally no other object can be stored within the OSC and be expected to provide the same result, in fact it will not function entirely. Additionally a singular OSC can only store one Ōin piece at a time, as the process is too complex, multiple fragments would cause it to overload and malfunction. Because the device utilizes the Ōin's natural power to function, it is entirely self-sufficient and capable of being used indefinitely, it can also be re-used to store another fragment if previously emptied. The materials used to construct the device are of surprisingly low cost, taking into account that the device's size allows it to fit in the palm of one's hand or in pocket easily. This had led to the OSC being mass produced and handed out to virtually all of the shinigami forces, so that they all are equipped to effectively deal with the retrieval of a fragment should they discover one. It is truly as simple as opening it up and placing the fragment inside.
