As it currently stands many abilities such as perception roll to many abilities into one such as the inclusion of intelligence and Wisdom into the same stat, which can limit certain aspects of a character. If a person wants to make an absent minded professor, they surely can with an Intellect of 5, and roleplay with a Wisdom of 2. But with the stats rolled together. Why bother doing that? If you are able to get a steak with a free side of half a chicken, why not? I'm not saying someone can't chose to have a 5 Int and then Roleplay as someone with a 2 wisdom or vice versa. I'm just saying theres many skills that can be abused and used for more skills described as. Intellect covering anything to do with the mind: Intelligence, Wisdom, reishi management, etcetc. Endurance: Covering ability to fight in a prolonged fight and ability to take hits and keep moving. The same goes for Agility, and following Kits words, Agility measures everything for feet and Finesse which governs everything about hands, which in itself is a bad system in that there are somethings speed cant cover. So I propose two different stat systems to hopefully chose from and update our current or replace. Of which one is simple and one more expanded than the current system.
As it stands we sit upon 7 (Con, Dex, W.S, Tech, N.A., Perc, Presence) categories with 2 specializations each (for 14 total) of stats. For the first system, I propose a 3 category system with many specialties within it
Body
Mind
Soul
Within each we can specialize further.
Body:
Strength; Self explanatory
Endurance; Ability to perform continuous strenuous physical activities and abilities with no rest
Toughness; A characters ability to soak damage and still be standing
Speed; General speed able for a person to move over a set distance
Finesse; Control of one's muscles to be graceful in combat and out. Essentially, the same stat as is now
Weapon skill/Zanjutsu; (sub-sectioned as offense and defense)
Mind:
Intelligence; Capacity of knowledge, logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning, creativity and problem solving. (as defined by wikipedia)
Wisdom; the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and insight. (as defined by wikipedia)
Charisma; The social skills of the individual and ability to charm others into accepting you or your point of view.
Discipline: The capacity to resist fear, pain, and mental effects caused by the enemy, as well as resist binding abilities.
Spirit:
Pressure; Ability to perform a greater number of non-physical techniques
Kidō / Natural Abilities / Quincy Abilities; (sub-sectioned as offense and defense)
Technique; (sub-sectioned as offense and defense)
Now this is not a definitive list and is not meant to be. And as such can easily be changed and added, the main key points I wished to make was the act of clearly defining and separating certain skills so that one skill didn't cover everything, and to rearrange certain skills to better fit the area they qualify for (Charisma being with the mind instead of presence/reserves apart of a reiryoku category). Many things would still need to be added especially to spirit.
The second stat system is not really stats at all, but more of a Feat system. Whereas stats quantify ability by some measurable number that is more adhering to comparable standards. A feat system relies more on descriptions of what a character has accomplished, as such, shows what a character accomplished in their life rather than using numbers to discern and be able to make direct comparisons to other characters.
Such feats would include but not limited to:
Strength training
Advanced strength training
Exceptional strength training
Weapon proficiency
Advanced Weapon proficiency
Tactile Mind
Observant mind
Unarmed specialist
Advanced Unarmed specialist
Exceptional Unarmed specialist
Mastery Unarmed specialist
And even drawbacks such as:
Weak Immune system
Daft brain
Maimed
So on and so forth. I would prefer a feat system myself as it is more inclusive of a characters personality and achievements without relyign on numbers for people to compare and use the entire WELL I HAVE A FIVE THERE AND YOU DON'T as it does also make problems with such a low comparison number of 5, since less numbers for each stat means more difference between each available block. I'm also more inclined to using it as it replaced the need for stats or a strengths/weaknesses section entirely.
After talking with Kit on how to revise the system, this would be my first draft of a solution. Lettuce discuss.
